In der untenstehenden Zeichnung beträgt die Entfernung bis zur Flagge 162 Meter. Sie beträgt zur Flagge B ebenfalls 162 Meter, obwohl sie auf einer Steigung steht. Wenn jedoch dieses Loch mit 162 Meter gespielt wird, würde der Ball

(X) kurz vor dem Loch/der Flagge fallen, weil die Steigung nicht berücksichtigt wurde.

Der Versuch, den Neigungswinkel mit bloßem Auge zu bestimmen kann recht enttäuschend sein. Die meisten Menschen sind nicht richtig in der Lage, einen Neigungswinkel genau zu bestimmen. Zum Beispiel beträgt die durchschnittliche Neigung der meisten Golfplätze ca. 4 Grad. Eine starke Neigung auf einem Golfplatz beträgt im Allgemeinen nicht mehr als 8 Grad. Dies kann natürlich unterschiedlich ausfallen, weshalb die Geräte Neigungen von -20 bis +20 Grad messen.

Zur Klärung ein Beispiel aus der Praxis: Eine durchschnittliche Dachneigung beträgt 6/12, was bedeutet, dass das Dach pro 12 Zoll horizontale Entfernung um 6 Zoll ansteigt. Dies ist gleich 26,5 Grad. Auf diese Schräge kann zwecks Aufhängens von Weihnachtsbeleuchtungen geklettert werden, aber es währe erschöpfend auf dieser Neigung über die Entfernung eines guten Golfschlages auf einem Golfplatz hinaufzusteigen. Für einen 182 Meter Golfschlag müsste man 91 Meter klettern!

Ein Beispiel aus der Golf-Praxis: Lassen Sie uns annehmen, Sie sind ein kräftiger Golfer mit einem 274 Meter Abschlag. Bei einer 20 Grad Steigung würde sich der Flaggenstock 17 Meter über ihnen befinden. Mit anderen Worten müsste der Ball in Höhe eines 5 Stockwerke hohen Gebäudes geschlagen werden!!!
