INSTALLING YOUR BT HOME MONITOR

What is the best way to set up my system? Where should I put my Control Panel and the Sensors?

We recommend that you take some time in advance to think about the placement of your Control Panel and Sensors.

The best position to site your BT Home Monitor Control Panel is usually by your main entry / exit point, or in a hallway or another central position in your home. Your Control Panel must be plugged into a power socket and a telephone socket. This may dictate where it is located.

Note that the alarm is pre-programmed with default settings, allowing you a pre-determined amount of time to enter (45 seconds) and leave (60 seconds) your property before the alarm sounds. If the Control Panel is not near your front door you can either change the default setting to give you more time to leave your home, or alternatively use the Keyfob or Keypad (sold separately) to turn the system on and off.

Placement of the Control Panel out of view does enhance the security of the system, ensuring intruders cannot easily locate and damage it.

Lastly, think about where you want to place the Sensors, for maximum effect. Sensors should be located in areas that you consider that a potential intruder could access. Doors and windows can be protected using a Magnetic Contact and larger areas should be protected using Movement Detectors.

Infrared Movement Detectors are best placed in rooms most vulnerable to threat, or passageways where people must walk to get to other rooms.

How many Sensors / Detectors can the BT Home Monitor support?

Up to 28 wireless sensors and detectors can be monitored by the system. Your BT Home Monitor VP1000 comes with a Magnetic Contact and two Movement Detectors so a further 25 sensors can be added.

What allowances do I need to make for my pets?

The pet tolerant function means that pets up to 36kg (80lb) will not trigger an alert message, as long as they remain below 1m (3"). This means that Movement Detectors should not be fitted close to furniture or other objects that animals can climb, including staircases. Pet tolerance also decreases the closer the movement is to the detector.

If you have pets, it is important to consider if they will be allowed free access through the rooms. Don't forget the height restrictions, as a large dog could set off the alarm by jumping onto a piece of furniture, causing it to move above 1m from the floor.

What wireless range should I expect from Sensors?

Range will vary dependant on the type of building. However, in open space, Sensors should be capable of signalling up to 30 m from the Control Panel.

How do I affix my Sensors?

BT has provided adhesive tape and screws for the purpose of securely mounting these items. Please see the User Guide for more information about mounting the wireless Sensors.
