WARNING

Fire Risk.

Hearth extension required to protect combustible floors in front of appliance.

An 8 inch minimum hearth extension must be constructed of non-combustible material.

The base of the fireplace may sit on a combustible surface. The area in front of the fireplace must be protected by a noncombustible hearth extension, unless the fireplace is raised a minimum of 6 inches above the combustible floor or hearth. See figures 11.8 and 11.10.
