11.1.1 Ethernet Connection
IP
Internet Protocol. The network layer of TCP/IP. Required for communication wit h the internet.
Subnet mask
A number that is used to identify a subnetwork so that IP addresses can be shar ed on a local
area network.
Default Gateway
A router that serves as an entry point into and exit point out of a network. For example, a
local network (LAN) may need a gateway to connect it to a wide area network (WAN) or to the
Internet.
DHCP
Dynamic host configuration protocol. DHCPis a communications protoc ol that lets network
administrators manage centrally and automate the assignment of IP ad dresses in an organi-
zation’s network. Using the Inter net Protocol, each machine that can connect to the Internet
needsa unique I Pad dress. When an organiza tion sets up its computer users with a connection
to the Internet, an IP address must be assigned to each machine. WithoutDHCP, the IP ad-
dress must be entered manually at each computer and, if computers move to another location
in another part of the network, a new IP address must be entered. DHCPlets a network ad-
ministrator supervise and distribute IP addresses from a central point and automatical lys ends
a new IP address when a computer is plugged into a different place in the network.
