5.2.1 Setting the Dialogue Level
Asthemixisnearingcompletion,usethedialoguelevelindicatorsinDolbyRemote570
showninFigure5 2duringarepresentativeperiodofspeechtoselecttheDialogueLevel
valuefortheprogram.Themeasuredvalueoftheaudioprogramappearsinyellow ;the
DialogueLevelvaluesetinthesoftwareappearsingreen.

Inmostcases,selectingandmeasuringarepresentativeperiodofspeechwithinthe
programwillserveasagoodexampleoftheoveralldialoguelevelthroughoutthe
program,providedgoodmixingpracticesareobserved.Insomecasessuchas
documentaries,locationsound,andsoon,itmaybedifficulttomatchthedialoguelevel
fromsectiontosection,andwhilethedialoguelevelindicatorontheDP570canhelp,your
earsarethebesttool.
TodetermineaDialogueLevelvaluefortheprogram,useshorttermmeasurementsas
theyprovideameasurementoveratensecondperiodofprogramaudioanddonot
averagethemeasurementoveralongperiodoftime.Formoreinformationontheshort
andinfinitetermmeasurementmodes,seeMeasuringtheAverageLoudnessofIdentified
Clipsonpage31.
PressingtheAcceptbuttonresetstheDialogueLevelparameterwithintheoutput
metadatastreamfeedingdownstreamequipmenttoequaltheyellowvalue.Thegreen
numberchangestothevalueselected.
5.2.2 Monitoring the Dialogue Level
Asyoumix,checkthedialoguelevelindicator—theyellownumbersshowninFigure52—
frequentlytobesurethattheprogramstayswithinacceptablelimits.
OnceaDialogueLevelvaluehasbeenselected,eithershorttermorinfinitemeasurements
canbeuseddependingonyourpreference.Again,seeMeasuringtheAverageLoudnessof
IdentifiedClipsonpage31tounderstandthedifferencesbetweenthem.
Note:For5.1programming,themeasurementchannelshouldbesettoCenter,asmostof
theimportantspeechcontentwilloccurinthischannel.MeasureboththeLeftand
Rightchannelsofstereoinput.
