Therearetwofunctionalclassificationsofmetadata:
Professional—TheseparametersarecarriedonlyintheDolbyEbitstream.Theyareused
toautomaticallyconfigureadownstreamDolbyDigitalencoder,allowingmaximum
controlbythecontentproduceroverhowtheencodedbitstreamistreatedateachstepon
thewaytotheconsumer’sdecoder.
Consumer—TheseparametersarecarriedinboththeDolbyEandtheDolbyDigital
bitstream.Theconsumer’sDolbyDigitaldecoderusestheseparameterstocreatethebest
possibleaudioprogrampossibleoneachconsumer’splaybacksystem.Consumer
parametersincludetheDRCvalues,whichareultimatelyenabledbytheenduser ’s
selection,asdiscussedinDynamicRangeControlonpage88.
Bothtypesofmetadatacanbeexamined,modified,orpassedthroughduringencoding.
