30 hp Jornada 920 series wireless digital assistant user’s guide

getting started with phone functions

The phone and wireless data functions on your hp Jornada use the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) and general packet radio service (GPRS). The following sections will help you establish an account with a GSM/GPRS service provider, install the SIM card that stores your account information, and turn the phone on and off.

setting up an account with a GSM/GPRS service provider

To use the phone and wireless data features of your hp Jornada, you must establish a subscription with a GSM/GPRS service provider. The features available to you depend on the services offered by the service provider and the details of your subscription.

GSM voice services enable you to use your hp Jornada as a phone. You can make and receive calls and SMS messages to a number assigned by your service provider.

installing the sim card

When you register for a new account, your GSM/GPRS service provider will provide you with a SIM (subscriber information module) card. The SIM card contains your phone number, information about services to which you have subscribed, and other information that identifies your hp Jornada to the mobile phone network.

You can copy information stored on a SIM card to your hp Jornada (to Pocket Outlook Contacts), but you cannot copy information from your hp Jornada to a SIM card. For more information, see “managing phone numbers” under “phone tips and advanced features” later in this chapter.

You must install a SIM card in your hp Jornada before you can make or receive phone calls or use wireless data services. For more information, see “using your hp Jornada for the first time” in chapter 1.
