3A.SALT¼REFILLINGSTORAGETANK/BREAKINGASALT BRIDGE
WHENTOREFILL WITHSALT (orpotassium
chloride):TheSaltMonitorSystem(see page10) will
turnthelowsaltlightontowarnyouwhentorefill
withsalt.Checkforalowsaltlightafew weeks after
youinstall thesoftener,andeveryweekafterthat.
Alwaysrefill atabout the#2 saltmonitorlevel.At
thislevel,thetankis about1/3full.Neverlet the
softeneruseall thesaltbeforerefilling.Withoutsalt,
youwill soon havehardwater.Afterfilling,resetthe
SaltMonitorSystem,page10.
NOTE:
Youwill havealoss insofteningcapacityandmay
getpartlyhardwaterifless than10 inches(salt
monitorlevel2)ofsaltisinthestoragetank.

Sometimes,ahardcrustorsaltbridgeformsinthe
saltstoragetank.It isusuallycausedbyhigh
humidityorthewrong kindofsalt.Whenthesalt
bridges,anemptyspaceformsbetweenthewater
andsalt.Thensalt will notdissolve(melt) inthe
watertomakebrine.Withoutbrine,theresinbed
doesnotregenerateandyouwill havehardwater.
If thestoragetankisfull ofsalt,itishardtotell ifyou
havea saltbridge.Saltislooseontop,but thebridge
isunderit.Thefollowingisthebest waytocheckfor
a saltbridge.
Saltshouldbelooseall thewaytothebottomof the
tank.Holdabroomhandle,orliketool,up tothe
softeneras showninFIG. 9.Makeapencil markon
thehandle,1²or2²below thetopheightof therim.
Then,carefullypushitstraightdownintothesalt.Ifa
hardobjectisfeltbeforethepencil mark getstothe
topofthetank,itsmostlikelya saltbridge.Carefully
pushintothebridgeinafewplacestobreakit.Donot
trytobreakthesalt bridgebypounding onthe
outsideofthesalt tank.Youmaydamageit.
If thewrong kindofsaltmadethebridge,takeitout.
Thenfill thetankwith nuggetorpelletsaltonly.
