1E.FILL THE STORAGETANK WITHSALT
Brine(saltdissolvedinwater)isneededforeachand
everyregeneration.Thewaterfor makingbrineis
meteredintothesaltstoragetankbythesoftener.
However,youmustkeepthetankfilledwithsalt.
Fill thetankwithNUGGET orPELLET water
softenersalt.DO NOT userocksalts,as theyhave
dirtandsedimentsthat will stopthesoftenerfrom
working.
Beforefilling,besurethebrinewell coverisinplace
onthetopof thebrinewell.Saltstoragecapacityis
shownonpage20.Besuretoset thesalt monitor
system(see page 10).
POTASSIUMCHLORIDE,alternatetosalt:The
designof this softenerallowsfortheuseofpotas-
siumchlorideinplaceofsalt (sodiumchloride).
Potassiumchloridedoesnotadd sodiumtothe
water,andismore ecologicallyfriendly.Disadvan-
tagesincludehighercost,irregulardissolvingfac-
tors,andtheneedforlongersoftener regeneration
times.Ifyoudo use potassiumchloride,see page7 to
set thetimer foritsuse.
NOTES:
Thesaltmonitorsystem,page10,iscalibratedtothe
densityofnuggetorpellet watersoftenersalt.The
monitorwill not workas accuratelywithothertypes
ofsaltincludingpotassiumchloride,rockandsolar.
In humidareas,itisbest tofill thestoragetank
half-full,andtorefill itmoreoften.Saltbridging(see
page16)occursmoreoftenwhenconditions are
humid.
WATERSOFTENINGSALT WITHIRON REMOV-
INGADDITIVES Somesaltshaveanadditiveto
helpthesoftenerhandleironinthewatersupply.
Althoughthis additivemayhelptokeepthesoftener
resinclean,itmayalsoreleasecorrosivefumesthat
will weakenandshortenthelifeofsomesoftener
parts.

Sodium information:Watersoftenersusingsodium

Personswhoareonsodium restricted diets should
considertheaddedsodiumas partof theiroverall
sodiumintake.
Forexample,ifyourwatersupplyis 15 grainshard,
youwouldhavetodrink3quartsofsoftenedwater
toconsume335 milligramsofsodium.Thatis
equivalent toeating2-1/2 slicesof whitebread.
Personswhoareconcernedabout theirdrinking
watershouldconsideraKenmoreDrinkingWater
Systemthatwill removeor reduceinexcess of90%of
thesodiumandotherdrinkingwatercontaminants.
Thedesignofthissoftener also allowstheuse ofpotassium
chlorideasanalternatetosalt (see above,left).Potassium
chloridedoes notadd sodiumtothewater.
