1 Introduction

The Quatech DSE-410D Dual-Port Ethernet Serial device server provides Ethernet to Serial connections for RS-232, RS-422, or RS-485 devices. The serial ports can be accessed over a LAN/WAN using “Direct IP Mode”, “Virtual COM Port”, or “Paired Mode” connection. The 10/100 Mbps Ethernet connection auto-selects 10 BaseT or 100 BaseTX and indicates the type of connection with a bi-color link light.

The Heart Beat Connection ensures reliable communications in Virtual COM port mode or with paired connections. This feature restores the connections if communications are temporarily lost at either end due to loss of power or the Ethernet connection.

The Quatech DSE-410D Manager Software provides easy configuration of Ethernet and Serial port settings. For configuration, the DSE-410D can be attached to your network using a standard Cat 5 Ethernet cable, or to the Ethernet port of your computer using a crossover cable. If a network connection is not available, the DSE- 410D can be configured in Console Mode from an RS-232 port, using a VT100 Terminal Emulation program and an RS-232 crossover cable. HyperTerminal is included with Windows and is recommended.

The DSE-410D Virtual COM Driver installs a virtual COM port which is viewable in the Windows Device Manager under “Ports” (COM & LPT). This virtual COM port provides access to one of the ports on the DSE-410D the same as any other serial port (legacy, PCI, USB, or PCMCIA) on the computer. Any program running on the computer and using Windows-based COM ports can access the serial devices attached to the DSE-410D. The LAN becomes transparent to the serial device and the software running on the PC.
