HFS Syntax

If the ￿leset begins with a dot (.) or a slash (/), it is parsed according to the HFS syn tax. In this case, the ￿leset parameter that you type at the command line (including command name, keywords and options) can ha ve, at most, 511 characters. It has an optional beginning slash follo wed by zero or more names separated b y slashes.

The characters composing the name ma y be selected from the following set:

a-z

A-Z

0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 - _ .

The ￿le names cannot begin with a h yphen (-). The follo wing wildcards ma y also be used:

@? # [ - ]

@matches 0 to 255 characters

?matches one character

#matches one digit

[ ]

matches one character speci￿ed bet ween the

 

brackets

-

if used within brac kets ([ ]), the hyphen (-)

 

means a range of c haracters. For example,

 

[c - g]

 

means all the characters bet ween c and g

 

inclusive. The character on the left m ust

 

alphabetically precede the c haracter on the

 

right.

-

If used immediately after the left brac ket ([),

 

or just before the righ t bracket (]), hyphen (-)

 

means the character `-' itself.
