Setting up the Remote Supervisor Adapter

This section describes features, setup requirements, and how to cable and configure the Remote Supervisor Adapter for use on an Advanced System Management (ASM) network so that you can manage the server from a remote location.

Note: The information in this section is intended for use with the Remote Supervisor Adapter, not the Remote Supervisor Adapter II-EXA. For information on setting up and configuring a Remote Supervisor Adapter II-EXA, go to “Setting up the Remote Supervisor Adapter II-EXA” on page 40.

Remote Supervisor Adapter features

Standard features of the Remote Supervisor Adapter are as follows:

vContinuous health monitoring and control

vAdvanced Predictive Failure Analysis (PFA)

vConfigurable notification and alerts

vEvent logs that are time-stamped, saved in nonvolatile memory, and can be attached to e-mail alerts

vRemote graphics console redirection

vLAN, serial, and Advanced System Management (ASM) interconnect remote access

vPoint-to-point protocol (PPP) support

vSimple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)

vDomain Name System (DNS) and Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) support

vRemote power control

vMicrosoft Windows 2000, WIndows NT, and Windows Server 2003 blue-screen capture

vRemote firmware update and access to critical server settings

vOptional, independent power, which enables around-the-clock access to the server, even if the server is powered off

Setup requirements

Before you set up the Remote Supervisor Adapter, you must download to a diskette, the DOS Remote Supervisor Utility program from http://www.ibm.com/pc/support/.

Complete the following before you set up the Remote Supervisor Adapter:

vInstall the operating system on the server, using ServerGuide and the documentation that comes with the operating system.

vInstall the agent component of UM Server Extensions to use the following Advanced System Management (ASM) Web interface features:

Shutdown O/S and then Power Off Server

Shutdown O/S and then Restart Server

UM Server Extensions is on the system-management software CD that comes with the server. For information about installing the agent component, see the documentation that comes with the system-management CD.
