If you do not already have a home

®network and you want to learn how to create one, Linksys — a leading manufacturer of wireless and always-on Internet connection networking equipment — provides valuable information on its web site at: www.linksys.com/support/.

Other online resources also describe the steps and types of equipment used to set up a home network. You can try going to a popular search engine like Google (www.google.com) or Yahoo (www.yahoo.com) and typing the phrase, “setting up a home network” in the search field. You will obtain a number of search results (links) that will help you set up your home network.

Introduction

This chapter shows you how to connect your Recorder to a home network. You should do this if:

You want to use the Music and Photos and/or Multi-Room Viewing features of Home Media Option. See Chapter 7 for more details.

You want to eliminate regular use of a phone line. The Recorder can use an always-on broadband Internet connection (for example, DSL or a cable modem) that is part of a home network for the Remote Scheduling feature of Home Media Option, and to connect to the TiVo service. It will still need a phone line during Guided Setup.

In addition, with an always-on broadband connection, you can use Remote Scheduling for any program airing more than an hour after you request it. (If your Recorder is using a phone line, processing a Remote Scheduling request can take up to 36 hours.)

Even if you do not have a home network, you can still connect multiple Recorders to each other to use the Multi-Room Viewing feature of Home Media Option. This setup is described online at www.tivo.com/support.
