Using the flash

The flash is used not only for taking pictures where there is insufficient light, but also when the subject is in shade or in backlight conditions. Your camera has four modes of operation (automatic flash mode, forced flash mode, flash off mode, and red-eye reduction mode).

The flash can be used only in the still image shooting mode. The effective flash range is:

Normal focus:

0.5 to 3.9 meters (widest lens setting) and 0.5 to 2.3 meters (telephoto lens

 

setting)

Macro focus:

0.15 to 0.5 meters (wide lens setting) and 0.25 to 0.5 meters (telephoto lens

 

setting)

Shooting using the viewfinder

1 Press the flash button.

œThe current flash mode is shown on the LCD monitor.

œTo change the flash mode, proceed to step 2 within five seconds. To keep the same flash mode, proceed to step 3.

No icon: The digital camera will detect the subject brightness and use the flash only when required. In a backlight situation, if only the center of the image is very dark, the flash will operate to compensate.

d: The flash will operate with every image captured regardless of the conditions. Use this setting under backlight conditions, when the subject is in the shade, under fluorescent lighting conditions, etc.

j: The flash will not operate even in dark situations. Use this setting when capturing an image in a location where flashes are forbidden, or when shooting a night landscape scene.

È: The digital camera will detect the subject brightness and use the flash only when required. At this time the flash will operate in a way that reduces the red reflection (“red-eye”) in the subject’s eyes.
