CD or DVD Problems

On some notebooks, the CD or DVD drive is removable. On other notebooks, the CD or DVD drive should be removed only by an authorized service provider.

ÄTo prevent damage to your CD or DVD drive and to your notebook, do not remove a CD or DVD drive unless you are certain that the CD or DVD drive on your notebook is removable. If your model-specific documentation does not include instructions for inserting and removing a CD or DVD drive, do not remove the CD or DVD drive.

CD or DVD drive is not recognized by the system

Make sure the correct device drivers are installed.

Update the system ROM.

If the notebook is running a retail version of the operating system and the drive was inserted while the system was on, in Standby, or in Hibernation, shut down the notebook. While the notebook is off, remove, then reinsert the drive. Then turn on the notebook.

Run a virus scan.

If the CD or DVD drive on your notebook is removable:

Remove, then reinsert, the drive exactly as instructed in your model-specific documentation.

Verify that the drive is not defective by using it in another drive bay.

Verify that the drive bay is not defective by using another drive in the same bay.
