Connecting the Workstation to the Switch

1Connect the workstation to the console port using a standard null modem cable as shown in Figure 8.

To connect the cable:

aAttach the RJ-45 to RS-232 cable to the console port on the Switch.

bConnect the other end of the cable to one of the serial ports (also known as a COM port) on your workstation.

cTighten the retaining screws on the RS-232 connector to prevent it from being loosened.

2Open your terminal emulation software and configure the COM port settings to which you have connected the cable. The settings should be set to match the default settings for the Switch, which are:

Any of the following baud rates: 1200, 2400, 4800, 9600, 19200, 38400, 57600, 115200. (Note that the COM port must be set to 19200 baud to view all the system initialization messages.)

8 data bits

no parity

1 stop bit

no hardware flow control
