Using Indexes to Improve Database Performance

Most LDAP servers use indexes to improve search performance. Indexes are files stored in your directory databases. Separate index files are maintained for each database in your directory. Each file is named according to the attribute it indexes. The index file for a particular attribute can contain multiple types of indexes. This feature enables you to maintain several types of indexes for each attribute. For example, a file called sn.db3 contains all of the indexes for the surname name attribute.

To improve the performance of the directory server you must index the database with attributes of hpKrbPrincipalName.

Depending upon the types of applications using your directory, you will use different types of indexes.

Indexes greatly improve the performance of searches in the directory databases, but they do so at the cost of slower database modification and creation operations. Indexes also cost more in terms of system resources, especially disk space.

HP recommends that you use the Presence and Equality type of index for the attribute hpkrbprincipalName.
