Designing Proportionally Spaced Characters

Proportional characters in the 249x are based on a 7-unit width system described in “Design Considerations” on page 121.

Typical proportional character widths are:

3 unit character-18 dot columns wide (3 x 6)

4 unit character-24 dot columns wide (4 x 6)

5 unit character-30 dot columns wide (5 x 6)

6 unit character-36 dot columns wide (6 x 6)

7 unit character-42 dot columns wide (7 x 6)

You are not restricted to following this unit system when designing a propor- tional character. You may not design a character that is wider than 42 dots.
