SETTING UP and PROGRAMMING the TELEPHONE INTERCONNECT The default user command for dialing the telephone has minimum set up. This means that you can make changes to the
outgoing call mode and timers that will not be affected by the off-hook dial macro. When building user commands and macros
for the telephone, you may want to use the following rules:
1. Place the off hook S-Command 82 at the beginning of your macro. When you send a off hook user command and you are
not encoding a valid telephone CTCSS tone, or if the telephone number is rejected by the toll restriction, the controller will
abort the macro at the 82 off hook S-Command and not execute additional S-Commands. You may not want to start
configuring the system for a telephone call and discover that the call gets aborted.
2. Keep all your telephone commands in one group (default is group 2) and assign all other non-telephone commands to other
groups. When the telephone goes off hook, disable all other user command groups using S-command 15. When the
telephone goes on hook, re-enable all other groups. This will keep the controller from executing a user command if the
dialed number happens to look like a user command.
3. You may want to consider turning off the courtesy messages during a telephone call, as they can get annoying.
Important tips:
• When setting up unique CTCSS tones and/or DCS codes for the telephone, make sure that you include the same tones
and/or codes on the repeater and user command tone panels. This is required in order to repeat the radio audio during a
telephone call and to control the telephone.
• If you ever change the location of the telephone off hook or on hook macros, make sure that you tell the controller where
your new macros are located. This is done with S-Command 32 18 and S-Command 32 19.
• If you have developed a complicated system with links, you may want not want a link active during a telephone call but you
may want to return the system to the mode it was in before the telephone call. This can be done by including a PUSH data
(S-Command 66 2) and a read EEPROM (S-Command 66 0) in your off hook macro. This will save your current system
set up and recall the power on defaults before making the telephone call. After the call is complete and you want to hang
up the telephone, you will POP data (S-Command 66 3); this will return the system to the mode it was in before the
telephone call.
TELEPHONE TONE REMOTE OPERATION The controller supports two types of tone remote operation. The first is a dial up mode that allows you to connect two repeaters
together via a standard telephone line. This mode allows for temporary linking between repeaters where telephone service is
available and radio linking is not practical. The second mode is a dedicated 2-wire connection that allows you to connect two
repeaters together in place of a radio link.
Dial up Tone Remote Linking
The dial up tone remote mode will allow you to link to another RI-300 or RI-310 controller over a standard telephone line. In
this mode, PTT control signals are passed between controllers in a tone remote format (2175 Hz tone). Do this by setting the
telephone incoming call S-Command 71 to mode 2 or higher, and enabling S-Command 28 mode 4 on both controllers. Set
S-Command 70 to mode 6 on the calling controller and start an outgoing call. When the controllers connect, they will hand
shake with the monitor tone (2050 Hz). When this tone is detected, you can use S-Command 45 to build a macro to adjust
timers and play a message over the air to let users know that telephone link is operating. At this point, you can communicate in
the same manner as you would with a radio link. In this mode, the telephone off hook time out timer (S-Command 77) is used
to limit the total length of the connection. The telephone no activity timer out timer may also be used to disconnect if a period
of time occurs without receiver activity. You can use this mode with the standard telephone call mode by setting up this mode
in the telephone linking command and resetting this mode on hang up of the telephone.
