Digital Audio is a sound signal that has be en
converted into nu merical values. Di gital sound
can be transmit ted through multip le channels.
Analog sound can only b e transmitted th rough
two channels.
Disc menu
A screen display that allows election of im ages,
sounds, subtit les, multi-angles , etc., recorded
on a DVD.
DivX®
The DivX® codec is a patent-pending,
MPEG-4 base d video compression tec hnology
developed by DivX®, Inc. It ca n shrink the le
size of digital video a nd still maintain the h igh
visual quality.
D olby Digital
A surround sound system developed by D olby
Laboratori es that contains up to six cha nnels
of digital audio (fron t left and right, sur round
left and right , center and subwoofer.)

JPEG
A very common digital still pict ure format.
A still-pict ure data compressio n system
proposed by the Joint P hotographic Exper t
Group, which featur es small decrease in image
quality in spite of i ts high compression r atio.
Files are recognize d by their le extension
‘.jpg’ or ‘. jpeg.’

M

MP3
A le format with a sound data compr ession
system. MP3 is th e abbreviation of Motion
Picture Expe rts Group 1 (or MPEG -1) Audio
Layer 3. With the M P3 format, one CD-R o r
CD-RW can contai n about 10 times more
data than a regula r CD.

A

Analog audio
Sound that has not been turned into numb ers.
Analog sound is availab le when you use the
AUDIO LEFT/RIG HT. These red and white
jacks send audio th rough two channels, th e
left and right .
Aspect ratio
Aspect ratio refers to the leng th to height
ratio of TV scree ns. The ratio of a sta ndard
TV is 4:3, while the r atio of a high-de nition
or wide TV is 16:9. The lett er box allows you
to enjoy a picture wi th a wider perspec tive on
a standard 4:3 scr een.
AU DIO OUT sockets
Red and white sockets that send audio to
another system ( TV, Stereo, etc).

Bit rate
Bit rate is the number of bits that ar e
conveyed or processed per u nit of time. The
bit rate is usually m easured in some multi ple
of bits per second (k ilobits per second: k bps).
The term bit rat e is a synonym for data
transfer rate (or sim ply data rate).

Chapter
Sections of a picture or a music piece on a
DVD that are smaller t han titles. A title is
composed of several cha pters. Each chapter i s
assigned a chapter nu mber that enables you to
locate a speci c chapter.
