O. Overfiring

Q. Fire Safety

Do not overfire. Using flammable liquids or too much wood, burning trash in the fireplace, or allowing too much air into the fireplace, may result in overfiring. If the chimney connector or fireplace glows red or even worse, white, the fireplace is overfired. This condition may ignite creosote in the chimney, which can be dan- gerous, possibly causing a house fire. If you overfire, immediately close the air controls and door, if open, to reduce the air supply to the fire. Overfiring will void the fireplace warranty.

P. Chimney Fire

In the event of a chimney fire:

Have the chimney and adjacent structure inspected by qualified professionals. Hearth & Home Technologies recommends that NFI or CSIA certified professionals, or technicians under the direction of certified professionals, conduct a minimum of an NFPA 211 Level 2 inspection of the chimney.

Replace components of the chimney and fireplace as specified by the professionals.

Ensure all joints are properly engaged and the chimney is properly secured.

A chimney fire can permanently damage your chimney sys- tem. Failure to replace damaged components and make proper repairs creates risk of fire.

To provide reasonable fire safety, the following should be given serious consideration:

1.Install at least one smoke detector on each floor of your home to ensure your safety. They should be located away from the heating appliance and close to the sleeping areas. Follow the smoke detector manufacturer’s placement and installation instructions, and be sure to maintain regularly.

2.Aconveniently located ClassA fire extinguisher to contend with small fires resulting from burning embers.

3.A practiced evacuation plan, consisting of at least two escape routes.

4.A plan to deal with a chimney fire as follows: In the event of a chimney fire:

a.Notify fire department

b.Prepare occupants for immediate evacuation.

c.Close all openings into the stove.

d.While awaiting fire department, watch for ignition of adjacent combustibles from overheated stove pipe, hot embers or sparks from the chimney.
