D. Care and Cleaning of Plated Surfaces

Clean-plated surfaces with vinegar or a glass cleaner before lighting your first fire to prevent permanent staining.

CAUTION

Clean all the fingerprints and oils from the surface before fir- ing the appliance for the first time.

Use a glass cleaner or vinegar and towel to remove the oils.

Oils can cause permanent markings on plating, if not removed.

After plating is cured, oils will not affect the finish.

CAUTION

Do not use polishes with abrasives. It will scratch plated surfaces.

Screens

1.

Assess condition of screen and replace as necessary.

 

 

 

 

2.

Verify maintenance of proper clearance to combustible household objects.

 

 

 

Glass Doors

1.

Inspect glass panels for cracks. Replace if this condition is present.

 

 

 

 

2.

Confirm there is no damage to glass or glass frame. Replace as necessary.

 

 

 

 

3.

Inspect door rope. Confirm glass does not move around in glass frame

 

 

 

 

4.

Clean glass using a non-abrasive cleaner.

 

 

 

Door Rope

1.

Open door, place half of dollar bill inside, and close door.

(Dollar Bill Test)

 

 

2.

Attempt to pull the bill out.

 

 

 

 

 

3.

If the bill gives good resistance or is not removable, the rope is adjusted correctly.

 

 

If the bill comes out too easily, the door rope needs adjustment to create an even thickness all around door.

 

 

 

Air Intakes

1.

Remove any foreign objects.

 

 

 

 

2.

Verify unobstructed air circulation.

 

 

 

Firebox

1.

Inspect condition of brick. Replace if crumbly, deteriorated, or if cracks exceed 1/4 in. (6 mm).

 

 

 

Chimney

1.

Inspect for blockage or obstruction such as bird nests, leaves, etc.

 

 

 

 

2.

Confirm that termination cap remains clear and unobstructed by plants, etc.

 

 

 

 

3.

Verify that termination cap clearance to subsequent construction (building additions) has been maintained.

 

 

 

 

4.

Inspect for corrosion or separation.

 

 

 

 

5.

Verify weather stripping, sealing and flashing remain intact.

 

 

 

 

6.

Inspect for creosote and remove as needed.
