Mantel Requirements

Use the table below to determine the maximum mantel depth allowed. The mantel depth (measured from the face of the fireplace) must fall in the shaded portion of the table.

Any facing material that protrudes more than 3/4” from the face of the fireplace is considered a mantel and must meet the mantel requirements.

Combustible mantel columns (legs) that protrude more than 3/4” from the glass frame must meet the sidewall clearance (1”). If they protrude 3/4” or less, they may be placed directly to the side (but not in front) of the fireplace.

Non-combustible mantel columns do not have a minimum clearance.

Examples: • If you wish to have a 8” deep mantel, it must be at least 12-1/4” above the fireplace face (49” above the base).

• If you wish to have a mantel 8” above the fireplace face, it must be no deeper than 3-3/4”.
