Using SCSI devices

A SCSI device is any product—including hard disk drives, CD-ROM drives, scanners, and printers—that communicates with Macintosh computers by means of a standard electronic interface. (SCSI stands for Small Computer System Interface.) You can attach up to six SCSI devices to your computer by linking them together in a chain that starts at your computer system’s SCSI port.

There is a SCSI port on the Duo Dock and the Duo MiniDock. (There is no SCSI port on the PowerBook Duo.) The SCSI port looks like this:

To connect a SCSI device to this port, you need an Apple HDI-30 SCSI System Cable.

Setting up one or more SCSI devices for use with your PowerBook Duo System involves the steps listed here.

ninstalling software

nsetting SCSI ID numbers

nchecking that the SCSI chain is properly terminated

nconnecting cables

These steps are described in the following sections.

Installing software

Most SCSI devices come with software that allows your computer to communicate with them. These programs are called drivers. (If no drivers come with a device, then it doesn’t need any.) To install a driver, follow the instructions that came with the device.
