Note the following about the B&N Fast & Free Wireless signal strength indicator:

When Airplane mode is on: no B&N Fast & Free Wireless signal indicator is displayed, but the Airplane mode indicator is displayed.

When your NOOK is able to connect to a Wi-Fi hotspot, it preferentially uses the Wi-Fi hotspot. It does not connect to B&N Fast & Free Wireless, and it does not display a B&N Fast & Free Wireless signal strength indicator.

When Airplane mode is off and your NOOK is not connected to a Wi-Fi hotspot:

When no compatible B&N Fast & Free Wireless network is detected, no B&N Fast & Free Wireless signal strength indicator is displayed.

When a compatible B&N Fast & Free Wireless network is detected, but the signal strength is too low to permit a connection to the network, no B&N Fast & Free Wireless signal strength indicator is displayed.

When a B&N Fast & Free Wireless network connection has been established: the B&N Fast & Free Wireless signal indicator shows a signal strength that ranges from one to four bars.

When Wi-Fi is off: no Wi-Fi signal strength indicator is displayed.

When Wi-Fi is on but your NOOK is not connected to a Wi-Fi hotspot: no Wi-Fi signal strength indicator is displayed.

When Wi-Fi is on and a Wi-Fi connection has been established: the Wi-Fi indicator shows a signal strength that ranges from one dot to one dot and three waves.
