6. DOS ASPI Drivers

In order to recover your system in Windows 9x from a SCSI-connected device, HP Simple Backup requires that you provide a working DOS ASPI driver for your SCSI card. In most cases, the Disaster Recovery Wizard will identify the necessary driver and prompt you for a location. This driver is generally distributed on a floppy diskette with your SCSI controller card.

If the controller card is unrecognized by HP Simple Backup, it will be necessary to manually locate and configure the driver. See your hardware documentation for more details.

11. Sparse Files

A significant difference between the estimated size and the actual byte count may occur if your operating system is set to use sparse files. The reported difference will have no effect on the integrity of your data.

12. HP Simple Backup and Active Desktop Applications

HP Simple Backup may report file miscompares of your Active Desktop applications if they are enabled during a backup. This is normal behavior as these applications are dynamically updated and therefore will not match archived copies.

7. Erasing CD-RW Media

HP Simple Backup does not support quick-erased CD-RW media. If you are using CD- RW media that has been quick-erased, a full-erase should be performed on this media before using it with HP Simple Backup.

8. Booting from CD

Some system configurations do not support booting from CD. For more information on determining if your system is equipped for SCSI or IDE bootable functionality, contact your SCSI controller vendor or system manufacturer.

9. USB and Firewire (1394) Devices

USB and Firewire (1394) devices are not supported in Windows 95 or Windows NT Workstation. Disaster Recovery functionality will not be available when using a USB or Firewire device.

10. Disaster Recovery Configuration

When preparing to run the Disaster Recovery process after a system failure, please ensure that your drive configuration is the same as the configuration in use when the backup was created. If the configuration is different, HP Simple Backup may not be able to correctly restore all of your data.

13. File Permissions for Backups and Restores

In order to back up and restore all data files on your computer, you must have the proper permissions to these files. Having READ permission to a file allows you to back it up, but you must have WRITE permission in order to restore it. A System Administrator, or a USERID with the Backup Operator permission level is required to backup and restore your operating system, and all data files on your computer.

14. Restoring Data from CD-RW Media

Not all CD-ROM drives can read CD-RW media. When restoring data from CD-RW (CD re-writable) media, you may need to use your CD-RW drive to read the media.

15. Disaster Recovery for Windows 2000

Some PC system manufacturers may be shipping versions of the Windows 2000 Professional operating system that contain limitations affecting the Disaster Recovery feature of HP Simple Backup. Depending on which version of Windows 2000 this product is used for, the Disaster Recovery feature may not be available.
