Charging While Connecting to a Computer

When the Charge by computer option (A202) in the camera’s setup menu is set to Auto (default setting), if the camera is connected to a computer using the USB cable, the battery inserted into the camera can be automatically charged depending on the ability of the computer to supply power.

See “Before Connecting the Camera” (A173) and “Transferring Images from a Camera to a Computer” (A174) for more information on connecting the camera to a computer.

Power-on Lamp

The following chart explains power-on lamp status when the camera is connected to a computer.

Lights (green)

Battery not charging. Charging is complete when the power-on lamp

stops slow-blinking (orange) and starts lighting (green).

The ambient temperature is not suited to charging. Charge the battery indoors with an ambient temperature of 5 °C to 35 °C (41 °F to 95 °F).

A USB cable is not correctly connected or the battery is faulty.

Flickers (orange) Reconnect the USB cable correctly or replace the battery.

Computer is in sleep mode and does not supply power. Reboot the computer.

The battery cannot be charged as computer’s specifications or settings does not support power supply to the camera.

BNotes on Charging with Connection to a Computer

The battery cannot be charged, nor can data be transferred, when the camera is connected to a computer before the camera’s display language and date and time have been set (A24). If the camera’s clock battery (A189) has been exhausted, the date and time must be reset before the battery

can be charged or images can be transferred with connection to a computer. In this case, use the Charging AC Adapter EH-69P (A20) to charge the battery and then set the camera’s date and time.

If the camera is turned off, charging will also stop.

If a computer enters sleep mode while charging, charging will stop and the camera may be turned off.

When disconnecting the camera from a computer, turn the camera off and then disconnect the USB cable.

About five hours and 30 minutes are required to charge a fully exhausted battery. Charging time increases when images are transferred while the battery is charging.

When the camera is connected to a computer, an application installed on the computer, such as Nikon Transfer 2, may start. If the camera was connected to the computer for the sole purpose of charging the battery, exit the application.

The camera turns off automatically if there is no communication with the computer for 30 minutes after the battery has finished charging.

Depending upon computer specifications, settings, and power supply and allocation, it may be impossible to charge the battery inserted into the camera via computer connection.
