AVCHD
AVCHD is a new format (st andard) for high def inition video
cameras that can be used to record and play high-resolution
HD im ages.
BD-J
Some B D-Vide o discs co ntain Java appli cations , and these
applications are called BD-J. You can enjo y various inter activ e
featur es in addi tion to playing normal vide o.
BD-Live
This is a B D-Vi deo (BD-RO M Pro file 2) tha t supports the new
functions such as Internet connection, etc. in addition to the
BONUSVI EW functio n.
Bitstream
This is the digital form of multi-channel audio data (e.g., 5.1
channel) before it is decoded into its various channels.
BONUSVIEW (Final Standard Profile)
This is a BD-Video (BD-ROM Profile 1 version 1.1) that
supp or ts th e ne w fu nc ti ons su ch as P ic tu r e-in- p ic tu r e an d
Secondary Audio, etc.
DivX
DivX is a popula r media technology cr eated by DivX, Inc. DivX
media files contain highly com pressed vide o with high vis ual
quality that maintains a relatively small file size.
DNS Server
A server which acts like a telephone directory and translates
In ternet domain names into IP addresses.
Dolby Digital
This is a method of coding digital signals develop ed by Dolby
Laborat ories. Apart from stereo (2-channel) audio, these
signals can also be multi-channel audio.
Dolby Digital Plus
Multi-channel audio and higher audio qu ality is made possible
using Dolby D igital Plus. BD-Video supports up to 7.1 channel
output.

Dolby TrueHD
Dolby TrueHD is a very high quality audio format that
repr oduces the studio master audio. BD-Video supports up to
7.1 channe l output.

DTS (Digital Theater Systems)
This surr ound sy stem i s used in many mo vie theaters. There is
good separation between the channels, so realistic sound
effects are possible .
DTS-HD
DTS-HD is a high-quali ty , soph istica ted audio fo rmat used in
movie t he a ter s . P rev io u s DT S Digita l Surr ou nd - co m pat ibl e
equipment can play DTS-HD as DTS Digital Surround audio.
BD -V ideo sup ports up to 7. 1 channel ou tput.
DTS-HD High Resolution Audio
This is a signal format achieved by improving the previous
DTS, DTS-ES and DTS96/24 formats. It is compatible with
sampling frequency 96 kHz/48 kHz. BD-Video supports up to
7.1 chan nel output.
DTS-HD Master Audio
This is a lossless audio format and compatible with 96 kHz/
7.1ch or less. In addition, faithful reproduction of the master
audio is enabled using lossless audio encoding technology.
BD -V ideo sup ports up to 7. 1 channel ou tput.
Dynamic range
Dynami c range i s the difference between the lowest leve l of
s ound that ca n be heard abov e the noise of the equipment and
the highest level of sound before distorti on occurs.
Dy na mi c ra ng e com pre ssi on m eans r ed ucin g th e ga p betw een
the loudest and softest sounds. This mean s you can l isten a t
low volumes but still hear dialog clearly.
Film and video
DVD-Video are recorded using either film or video. This unit
can det erm i ne whi c h typ e has been used, t he n us es the mos t
suitable method of progressive output.
Film: Recorded at 24 frames per second. (Recorded at
30 frames per s econd as well). Generally
appr o priat e for mot i on pictur e film s .
Vid eo: Recorded at 30 fr ames/60 fields pe r second.
Generally appropriate for TV drama programs or
animation.
Folder
Th is is a pl ac e on the dis c or SD ca r d whe re gr ou p s of da t a are
s tored toge ther. Additional folders can be creat ed wi thin
folders, and you can make detailed classifications depending
on the folder str ucture. (>39)
Fra mes and fields
Frames refer to the single images that constitute the video you
see on your television. Each frame consists of two fields.
A frame still sh ows two fi elds, so there ma y be so me blurring,
but picture quality is generally better.
A fiel d still shows less pi cture information so it may be
rougher, but there is no blurring.
Gateway
IP address of the electronic device providing Internet access.
Usuall y called a router IP address. (e.g. , 192.168.0.1)
HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface)
HDMI is a di gita l interfa c e for consumer electroni c products .
Unlike conventional connections, it transmits uncompressed
digital video and audio signals o n a single cable.
Hub
Used for connecting more than one device to the network.
