This chapter shows you how to confi gure your WR3000 Wireless Router fi rewall.

12.1Access Methods

The Web Confi guration Utility is, by far, the most comprehensive fi rewall confi guration tool your WR3000 Wireless Router has to offer. For this reason, it is recommended that you confi gure your fi rewall using the Web Confi guration Utility. SMT screens allow you to activate the fi rewall.

12.2Firewall Policies Overview

Firewall rules are grouped based on the direction of travel of packets to which they apply:

LAN to LAN/WR3000 Wireless Router

WAN to LAN

LAN to WAN

WAN to WAN/WR3000 Wireless Router

By default, the WR3000 Wireless Router’s stateful packet inspection allows packets traveling in the following directions:

• LAN to LAN/WR3000 Wireless Router

This allows computers on the LAN to manage the WR3000 Wireless Router and communicate between networks or subnets connected to the LAN interface.

• LAN to WAN

By default, the WR3000 Wireless Router’s stateful packet inspection blocks packets traveling in the following directions:

WAN to LAN

WAN to WAN/WR3000 Wireless Router

This prevents computers on the WAN from using the WR3000 Wireless Router as a gateway to communicate with other computers on the WAN and/or managing the WR3000 Wireless Router.

You may defi ne additional rules and sets or modify existing ones, but please exercise extreme caution in doing so.
