Setup overview
Wecall the collection of databases exchanging information using
SQLRemote an installation. Froma physical point of view, a SQL Remote
installationmay consist of hundreds or even thousands of databases sharing
information;but as SQL Remote keeps the information in each physical
databaseloosely consistent at a transactional level with that in other physical
databases, you can also think of the whole installation as a single dispersed
database.
Deployinga large-scale SQL Remote installation can involve setting up
databaseson many machines. Whilesome changes to the design and setup
configurationcan be made on a running installation, it is highly
recommendedthat you deploy only when you have completed a careful
analysisand test of your design.
Setuptasks Setupof a SQL Remote installation includes the following tasks:
Preparingyour server for SQL Remote Youmust take some steps to
configureyour Adaptive Server Enterprise to act as a SQL Remote site.
Theseinclude installing the SQL Remote system objects and the stable
queuesystem objects.
Selectingmessage types Youmust decide whether you want to
exchangeinformation by file sharing, e-mail, some other message type,
ora combination.
Ensuringproper permissions are set Each user in the installation
requirespermissions on both their own database and on the consolidated
database.
Extractingremote databases Youmust extract an initial copy of each
remotedatabase from the consolidated database.
Thischapter describes each of these tasks.
Alladministration is at
theconsolidated
database
Likeall SQL Remote administrative tasks, setup is carried out by a database
administratoror system administrator at the consolidated database.
TheSybase System Administrator should perform all SQL Remote
configurationtasks. See your AdaptiveServer Enterprise documentation for
moreinformation about the Adaptive Server Enterprise environment.
