Management overview

Thischapter describes administration issues for SQL Remote installations.

Administrationof a deployed and running SQL Remote setup is carried out

ata consolidated database.

♦Permissions Asa SQL Remote installation includes many different

physicaldatabases, a consistent scheme for users having permissions on

remoteand consolidated databases is necessary. A section of this chapter

describesthe considerations you need to make when assigning users

permissions.

♦Conﬁguringmessage systems Eachmessage system that is used in a

SQLRemote installation has control parameters and other settings that

mustbe set up. Thesesettings are discussed in this chapter.

♦TheMessage Agent TheMessage Agent is responsible for sending and

receivingmessages. Whilesome details of how the Message Agent

operatesand the conﬁguration options for it, are different for Adaptive

ServerAnywhere and Adaptive Server Enterprise, some concepts and

methodsare common to both. Thesecommon features are discussed here.

♦Messagetracking Administeringa SQL Remote installation means

managinglarge numbers of messages being handed back and forth

amongmany databases. Asection on the SQL Remote message tracking

systemis included to help you understand what the messages contain,

whenthey are sent, how they are applied, and so on.

♦Logmanagement SQLRemote obtains the data to send from the

transactionlog. Consequently,proper management of the transaction log,

andproper backup procedures, are essential for a smoothly running

SQLRemote installation. Whilemany details depend on the server you

arerunning, the generic issues are discussed in this chapter.

♦Passthroughmode Thisis a method for directly intervening at a

remotesite from a consolidated database. Thismethod is discussed in

thischapter.
