gatewaysoftware.
Checkpermissions and directory structures Ifthe FTP server is
connectingand having problems getting directory listings or manipulating
files;make sure your permissions are set up correctly and the directories that
youneed exist.
Loginto the FTP server using an FTP program. Changedirectories to the
locationstored in the root_directory parameter. Ifthe directories you need
donot show up, the root_directory control parameter may be wrong or the
directoriesmay not exist.
Testpermissions by fetching a file in your message directory and uploading
afile to the consolidated database directory. If you get errors your FTP
serverpermissions are set up incorrectly.
The SMTP message system
TheSimple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) is used in Internet e-mail
products.
Withthe SMTP system, SQL Remote sends messages using Internet mail.
Themessages are encoded to a text format and sent in an e-mail message to
thetarget database. Themessages are sent using an SMTP server, and
retrievedfrom a POP server: thisis the way that many e-mail programs send
andreceive messages.

SMTPaddresses and
userIDs Touse SQL Remote and an SMTP message system, each database
participatingin the setup requires a SMTP address, and a POP3 user ID and
password. These are distinct identifiers: the SMTP address is the destination
ofeach message, and the POP3 user ID and password are the name and
passwordentered by a user when they connect to their mail box.
Separatee-mail account recommended
Itis recommended that a separate POP e-mail account be used for SQL Re-
motemessages.
Troubleshooting Ifyou can not get the SMTP Link to work try connecting to the SMTP/POP3
serverfrom the same machine on which the Message Agent is running using
thesame account and password. Use an Internet e-mail program that
supportsSMTP/POP3 and make sure to disable the program once the SMTP
