SOUND FIELD PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS

This unit is equipped with a variety of precise digital decoders that allow you to enjoy multi-channel playback from almost any sound source (stereo or multi-channel). This unit is also equipped with a YAMAHA digital sound field processing (DSP) chip containing several sound field programs which you can use to enhance your playback experience. Most of these sound field programs are precise digital recreations of actual acoustic environments found in famous concert halls, music venues, and movie theaters.

The YAMAHA CINEMA DSP modes are compatible with all Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Surround sources. Set the input mode to AUTO (see page 44) to enable this unit to automatically switch to the appropriate digital decoder according to the input signal.

Notes

•This unit’s DSP sound field programs are recreations of real-world acoustic environments made from precise measurements taken in actual halls, etc. Thus you may notice variations in the strength of the reflections coming from the front, back, left and right.

•Feel free to choose a sound field program based on your listening preference, and not purely on the name of the program itself.

For movie/video sources

You can select from the following sound fields when playing movie or video sources. The sound fields marked MULTI can be used with multi-channel sources, like DVD, digital TV, etc. Those marked 2-CH can be used with 2-channel (stereo) sources like TV programs, video tapes, etc.

Program selection methods vary depending on sound field program types. For details on how to select sound field programs, see “Basic operations” on page 37.

		ENTERTAINMENT	CINEMA DSP processing. Though the presence sound field is relatively narrow,
		TV Sports	the surround sound field employs the sound environment of a large concert hall.
			This effect enhances the experience of watching various TV programs such as
			news, variety shows, music programs or sports programs.
	3	ENTERTAINMENT	CINEMA DSP processing. This program is provided for reproducing monaural
		Mono Movie	video sources (such as old movies). The program produces the optimum
			reverberation to create sound depth using only the presence sound field.
		ENTERTAINMENT	CINEMA DSP processing. This program adds a deep and spatial feeling to video
		Game	game sounds.
		MOVIE THEATER	CINEMA DSP processing. This program creates the extremely wide sound field
		Spectacle	of a 70-mm movie theater. It precisely reproduces the source sound in detail,
			making both the video and the sound field incredibly real. This is ideal for any

			kind of video source encoded with Dolby Surround, Dolby Digital or DTS
2-CH
			(especially large-scale movie productions).
		MOVIE THEATER	CINEMA DSP processing. This program clearly reproduces dialog and sound
		Sci-Fi	effects in the latest sound form for science fiction films, thus creating a broad
			and expansive cinematic space amid silence. You can enjoy science fiction films
			in a virtual-space sound field that includes Dolby Surround, Dolby Digital and
	4		DTS-encoded software employing the most advanced techniques.
		MOVIE THEATER	CINEMA DSP processing. This program is ideal for precisely reproducing the
		Adventure	sound design of the newest 70-mm and multichannel soundtrack films. The
			sound field is made to be similar to that of the newest movie theaters, so the
			reverberations of the sound field itself are restrained as much as possible.
		MOVIE THEATER	CINEMA DSP processing. This program is for reproducing sounds from 70-mm
		General	and multichannel soundtrack films, and is characterized by soft and extensive
			sound field. The presence sound field is relatively narrow. It spatially spreads all
			around and toward the screen, restraining the echo effect of conversations
			without losing clarity.
