Turning the PowerBook on and off

Your Macintosh PowerBook can be in one of three power states:

off, sleep, or on.

Off

When the PowerBook is off, the computer is not using any power

or doing any work. The terms shut down and off both refer to this

state.

You should turn the computer off to

mattach other equipment to it

mreplace its battery

mconserve power when you won’t be using it for several hours

To turn the PowerBook off

mIf the computer is on, choose the Shut Down command from

the Special menu. (The Macintosh Basics tour teaches how to

choose a menu command.)

mIf the computer is in sleep, wake it by pressing any key on the

keyboard (except Caps Lock), and then choose Shut Down.

SImportant: Don’t shut down with the power button on

the back panel of the computer unless a problem prevents

you from choosing Shut Down. You will lose any work you

did not save, and you may experience problems with your

hard disk. S

The computer just stopped. The computer is very hot. The computer exhibits odd behavior, such as many unexplained system failures. Power The battery is draining too fast. The battery cant be recharged. The computer goes to sleep too often. The computer doesnt go to sleep automatically. The screen A window has disappeared. An icon is blinking in the menu bar. Memory A not enough memory message appears when you try to open a program. SCSI devices You cant turn on the computer after connecting a SCSI device. The computer doesnt recognize your SCSI devices. Disk drives and disks The computer wont start up from its hard disk, or the hard disk icon doesnt appear on the desktop. The hard disk keeps stopping and starting again. The hard disk is full. The icon of a floppy disk doesnt appear on the screen. A disk you use with your PowerBook computer is not recognized by another Macintosh. You cant eject a disk from a floppy disk drive. A message says that a disk is not initializedbut you know that it is. You cant delete a file on a floppy disk. You cant save or copy files onto a floppy disk. Modems The external modem doesnt work. The internal modem doesnt work. Printers Your computer cant find the printer. The network printer keeps restarting. Nothing happens, or you see an error message, when you try to print. Your documents are printed with the wrong fonts. Networks You cant find or cant open icons needed to set up file sharing. The shared disk you want to connect to does not appear in the Chooser window. You cant open a shared disk or folder. You cant connect to your own computer from another Macintosh. Application programs A program wont open. A program runs very slowly. A program doesnt work, or malfunctions consistently. A message says that a program could not be found. You just did something you didnt mean to do.
