A network is an interconnected group of communications systems that can exchange voice and data across the transmission media that connect them. Arranging communications systems into networks involves physically linking the systems (nodes) together with the appropriate hardware. In addition, it involves installing and administering the networking software.

Chapter 1 of this manual tells you about the hardware that you can use to physically link communications systems with each other. This chapter provides an overview of the software that you must activate and administer for network communication.
