GPS Navigation Overview

Hazard Avoidance

traffic position updates typically occur every three to thirteen seconds. Therefore,

TIS-B traffic may be displayed with degraded positional accuracy. Aircraft without operating transponders are invisible to TIS-B. Aircraft operating outside of the ATC radar coverage area are also not displayed.

Since the GDL 39 is a receive-only device, even when used onboard an aircraft equipped with a qualifying GPS and 1090 ES transponder, a GBT may not identify it as an ADS-B participating aircraft. The squitter of some 1090 ES transponders, including the Garmin GTX 23ES, must be configured to communicate that the aircraft has 978 MHz receive capability in order to be identified as an ADS-B participating aircraft.

Flight Planning

WARNING: Do not rely solely upon the display of traffic information for collision avoidance maneuvering. The traffic display does not provide collision avoidance resolution advisories and does not, under any circumstances or conditions, relieve the

pilot’s responsibility to see and avoid other aircraft.

Appendices Additional Features Hazard Avoidance

WARNING: Do not rely solely upon the display of traffic information to accurately depict all of the traffic within range of the aircraft. Due to lack of equipment, poor signal reception, and/or inaccurate information from aircraft or ground stations, traffic may be

present that is not represented on the display.
