Updating the BIOS

Flash memory simplifies distributing BIOS upgrades. If you need a new version of the BIOS, you can download the BIOS update from technical support on the Gateway Web site and install the new version from a diskette.

To update the BIOS you need to perform the following tasks in sequence:

Create a bootable diskette

Note the current BIOS settings

Create the BIOS update diskette

Update the BIOS

Restore the BIOS settings

To create a bootable diskette:

1Insert a blank, 3½-inch diskette into drive A:.

2Insert the System Restoration CD into the CD drive, go to the utilities tab, then select Boot Disk to format the diskette and make it bootable.

To note the current BIOS settings:

1Remove the bootable diskette and restart your computer.

2Enter the BIOS Configuration Manager by selecting Enter Setup with your mouse when the Gateway Logo screen appears.

3Write down the settings for each of the fields. (At the end of the BIOS update process, you will reset the fields back to the values you recorded.)

4Exit the BIOS Configuration Manager.

To create the BIOS update diskette:

1Go to the Gateway Web site (www.gateway.com/product/drivers/BIOS/pentium.shtml).

2Download the appropriate file (you will need to know your BIOS version number) to your hard drive.

3Double-click on the file to unzip it, then copy autoexec.bat, newflash.exe, and wpgbios.bin to the diskette.
