A.1 DeviceNet Overview

A.1.1 Description

DeviceNet™ is an open low-cost digital, multi-drop network based on the reliable CAN technology to interconnect industrial devices (such as limit switches, photoelectric sensors, valve manifolds, motor starter, process sensors, panel displays, etc.) via a single network. This eliminates expensive wiring and failure due to the increase of number of connections. It also reduces the cost and time to install industrial automation devices while providing reliable interchangeability of components from multiple vendors. The direct connectivity provides improved communication between devices as well as important device-level diagnostics not easily accessible or available through hard-wired input/output interfaces.

DeviceNet systems can be configured to operate in a master-slave or a distributed control architecture using peer-to-peer communication. DeviceNet systems offer a single point of connection for configuration and control by supporting both input/output and explicit messaging. DeviceNet also has the unique feature of having power on the network. This allows devices with limited power requirements to be powered directly from the network, reducing connection points and physical size.

DeviceNet permits the interchangeability of simple devices while making interconnectivity for more complex devices possible. In addition to reading the state of discrete devices, DeviceNet provides the capability of reading analog data such as temperatures, load current or to count the number of items that have passed on a conveyor belt in the given period.
