62SUBMERGED OUTBOARDMOTOR
TAKING CARE OF UNEXPECTED PROBLEMS
STARTERGRIP
Direction to pull
A submergedoutboard motor must
be serviced immediately after it is
recovered from the water in order to
minimize corrosion.
Removethe engine cover, and
rinsethe outboard motor with
fresh water to remove salt water,
sand,mud, etc.
Drain thecarburetor as described
on p. .
If the engine was running when it
submerged,there may be
mechanicaldamage, such as a bent
connectingrod. If the enginebinds
when cranked,do not attempt to
run the engineuntil it has been
repaired.
If there is a Honda Marine dealership
nearby,take the outboard motor to
the dealer immediately. If you are far
from a dealer, proceed as follows:
Removethe spark plug (p. ),
and remove the emergency stop
switch clip from the emergency
stop switch. Pull the starter grip,
rotate the flywheel a few
revolutions to completely expel
any water from the cylinder.
Change theengine oil as described
on p. . If there was water
in the enginecrankcase, or if the
used engineoil showed signs of
water contamination, then a second
engineoil change should be
performed after running the engine
for half an hour.
