Computer algebra system (CAS)

A computer algebra system (CAS) enables you to perform symbolic calculations. By default, CAS works in exact mode, giving you infinite precision. On the other hand, non-CAS calculations, such as those performed in HOME view or by an app, are numerical calculations and are often approximations limited by the precision of the calculator (to 12 significant

digits in the case of the HP Prime). For example,

2

yields

--

+ --

the approximate answer .619047619047 in Home view (with

Standard numerical format), but yields the exact answer 13 in

the CAS.

The CAS offers many hundreds of functions, covering algebra, calculus, equation solving, polynomials, and more. You select a function from the CAS menu, one of the Toolbox menus discussed in chapter 21, “Functions and commands”, beginning on page 307. Consult that chapter for a description of all the CAS functions and commands.

CAS view

CAS calculations are done in CAS view. CAS view is almost identical to Home view. A history of calculations is built and you can select and copy previous calculations just as you can in Home view, as well as store objects in variables.

To open CAS view, press K. CAS appears in red at the left of the title bar to indicate that you are in CAS view rather than Home view.
