IMPORTANT: Because of subtle differences between discovery from HP SIM and HP SE, HP strongly recommends you do either all of your discovery steps in HP SIM or HP SE. See Differences Between HP SE and HP SIM Discovery” on page 16 for more information about the differences between HP SIM and HP SE discovery.

Discovery from HP SIM Steps

Discovery of switches, storage systems, filers and tape libraries consists of several steps:

1.Discover your switches by using HP Systems Insight Manager. See Step 1 - Discover Switches” on page 31. Refer to the documentation for HP SIM for detailed information about discovery.

2.Discover your storage systems, filers and tape libraries by using HP Systems Insight Manager. See Step 2 - Discover Storage Systems, Filers and Tape Libraries” on page 53.

3.Obtain details about the elements you previously discovered by using the Run Discovery Data Collection feature. You must run Get Details to obtain provisioning information. This step takes some time to complete. Run Get Details when the network is not busy. See Step 4 - Discovery Data Collection or Get Details” on page 80 for more information.

Discovery from HP SE Steps

Discovery for switches, storage systems, filers and tape libraries consists of several steps:

1.Discover your switches. See Step 1 - Discover Switches” on page 31.

2.Discover your storage systems, filers and tape libraries. See Step 2 - Discover Storage Systems, Filers and Tape Libraries” on page 53.

3.(Optional) If you want to view the topology quickly in System Manager, obtain the topology as described in Step 3 (Discovery from HP SE Only) - Build the Topology” on page 75. Keep in mind this step only gathers the information necessary for displaying the topology.

4.Perform Get Details. Get Details is required to obtained detailed information from the elements you discovered. You must run Get Details to obtain provisioning information. This step takes some time to complete. Run Get Details when the network is not busy. See Step 4 - Discovery Data Collection or Get Details” on page 80 for more information.

IMPORTANT: Before performing any provisioning operations that involve a brocade switch you must perform Discovery Step 3 for any subset of elements that includes this brocade switch.

Keep in mind the following:

Accessing the Discovery pages for discovery from HP SIM or HP SE differs. See Accessing the Discovery Pages for HP SIM and HP SE” on page 17 for details.

To save time, make sure the user names and passwords are correct. When credentials are not supplied, the default user names and passwords are tried for the element.

After you discover an EMC Connectrix or McDATA switch, the IP address displayed next to the name of the switch is actually the IP address of the service processor for the switch in the Get
