Cable configuration

Cable configuration

The RS232 connection requires the special cabling as described in the figure below. The 9- pin female connector plugs into the PC (or other microcontroller). The 15-pin male connec- tor plugs into the AX500.

It is critical that you do not confuse the connector’s pin numbering. The pin numbers on the drawing are based on viewing the connectors from the front (facing the sockets or pins). Most connectors have pin numbers molded on the plastic.

Extending the RS232 Cable

The AX500 is delivered with a 4-foot cable adapter which may be too short, particularly if you wish to run and monitor the controller inside a moving robot.

RS232 extension cables are available at most computer stores. However, you can easily build one using a 9-pin DB9 male connector, a 9-pin DB9 female connector and any 3-wire cable. These components are available at any electronics distributor. A CAT5 network cable is recommended, and cable length may be up to 100’ (30m). Figure 68 shows the wiring diagram of the extension cable.
