9 - Operations related to timecode
TASCAM DA-78HR

If you are recording timecode only, we suggest that
you do not use external sources for recording time-
code.
Set the source to TAPE T C a s de scrib ed imm e diatel y
above, and use
ABS ( see 9.2 .2, “A BS set tin g”) as t he
tape timecode source. This will ensure an accurate
match between th e timecode and the ABS timing ref -
erence (the fact that the generator must be started
manually means that there will not be a tight relation
between timecode and the ABS timing).
This will also allow you to synchronize multiple
DTRS units accurately to external timecode, even
though the slave units are not timecode-based.
9.5.2 Recording timecode using the generator1Insert a formatted tape into the DA-78HR.
It is possi ble to format a nd stripe a new tape
simultaneously, by setting up the formatting
procedure as described in 5.1, “Formatting a
tape” and then following the instructions
below.
2Select timecode as the timing reference (9.1.3,
“Selec t ing TC or A BS timi n g”).
3Select a frame rate (9.3, “Selecting the frame
mode”).
4Press the SHIFT key so tha t the SHIFT indicator
is flashing, then press the MENU key until the
display show s TCG. REC-- (TCG REC--).
5Selec t the s ou rce of the time c od e as th e i nte r na l
generator (9.5.1, “Selecting the timecode
source”).
6Press the S UB MENU key until the display
briefly shows STR T. TIME (STRT TIME), fol-
lowed by the current start time of the
generator.
7Edit the generator start time as described in
4.3, “M e nus and sub-men us”.
8To record the timecode, press the SUB MENU
key until the display shows TC. REC. EN 0 (TC
REC EN 0, i.e. disabled). Use the ▲ and ▼ keys
to cha n ge th e setti ng to 1 (enabled).
The TC indicator will start flashing. This set-
ting will return to 0 (disabled) when timecode
recording has finished.
9To start the generator , press the SUB MENU
key until the display shows TGc. STOP (TCG
STOP). Then use the ▲ or ▼ key to star t the
generator running.
The display will show TCG. RUN (TCG RUN).
10Press and hold the PLAY and press the
RECORD key and the tape will start recording.
The TC indicator will start flashing faster
while timecode striping is going on.
NOTE
You can also start recording (steps 8 and 10) and
then st art th e tim ecode ge nera tor (st e p 9).
If the method described above (arming the timecode
track, and then starting recording) is used, the tape
counter is used to show the output from the timecode
source (the generator) when the timecode track is
armed, flashing when the tape is stopped, and steady
when the tape is running.
9.5. 3 Gen erat or mod esWhen the timecode generator is stopped, using the
sub-menu command to restart the generator will
either restart from the start time as set in 7, or to con-
tinue from the time when it was stopped.
1Press the SHIFT key s o that the SHIFT indicator
is flashing, then press the MENU
key until the
display show s TCG. REC -- (TCG REC--).
2Press the SUB MENU key so that the display
shows TCG. MODE (TCG MODE ) brief ly, and
then changes to the current setting.
3Use the ▲ and ▼ keys to choose between
RESet (RESET—resume st art fro m set value )
and Co NT (CONT —continue from currently
reached value).
9.5. 4 S y n t h esiz i ng tim ecod e f ro m AB S timingWhen you are synthesizing timecode from ABS, the
tape counter display behaves differently from the
way as described above.
The tape counter will not flash when the timecode
track is armed and the tape is stopped, and it will not
display all hyphens, since the timecode source is
always available.
In this case, you can start recording the timecode at
any time (before or after) the tape has started
movin g.
