water. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents such
as alcohol or thinner.
Avoid subjecting the DA-78HR to jolts, sudden
shocks, etc.
NOTE
— IMPORTANT
If you have to return the unit for service or repair, use
the or igin al packi n g mater i als if po ssible . If the un it is
to be transported to a recording location, etc., use a
suitable transport case with sufficient shock
protection.
TASCAM does not accept responsibility for damage
resulting from neglect or accident.

1.4.4 Installi ng t he DA-78H R

The DA -7 8HR may be insta l led in a sta ndard 19
rack, occupying 3U of space. Since the DA-78HR is
quit e heavy (ar ound bet ween 7 an d 8 kg – ab ou t
16lb.), your rack should be strong and stable to take
the weight of the DA-78HR.
The DA- 78 H R should be mo un te d wit h the fron t
panel ve rtica l.

1.4.5 Electrical conside rat ions

Make sure that your local power supply matches the
voltage requirements m arked on the rear panel of the
DA-78HR.
If you are in any doubt concerning the local power
supply, consult an electrician.
Avoid extreme voltage fluctuations. If necessary, use
an input voltage regulator to smooth the power sup-
plied to t he DA-78HR.
Do not open the unit to clean inside, or to perform
any internal adjustments. You should not attempt any
cleaning or other maintenance procedures which are
not described in this manual.
You may need to clean the heads occasionally. The
procedure for doing this, and for checking tape error
rate s, etc., i s given in 11 .1, “Head and tran s p ort
cleaning”.

1.4. 6 Thr ee-co re pow er co rd

In order to maint ain the b est poss i ble audi o qualit y,
the DA-78HR is supplied with a 3-core (grounded)
power co r d. DA-78 HR should be used w ith a
grounded power cord, connected to a suitable electri-
cal ground, at all times. If it is not, there is a possibil-
ity that the audio quality will suffer.

1.4.7 Powering the DA-78HR off and on

When powe ring t he DA-78HR of f and on, a lways
wait for five seconds or more between powering the
unit off and turning it on again. If the power is
switched too quickly, the precision power supply
may not provide th e power of the p roper quality
required for recording.
If power is inadvertently switched off an on quickly,
and the power supply doe s no t res p ond properly,
switch the unit off again, wait for five or more sec-
onds, a nd switc h i t on agai n.

1.4.8 Con densation

If you use the DA-78HR in a warm place after mov-
ing it from a cold place (for instance, recording on
location), or if there has been a sudden change in
temperature, condensation may o ccur within the tape
mechanism, with a risk of possible damage to the
unit.
If condensation does occur, you will not be able to
operate the DA-78HR controls, and you will see the
following message on the display E DEW (E DEW).
If you see the above message, leave the DA-78HR
switc h e d on for one or t wo hours, t hen sw it c h it off
and on ag ai n be f ore starting record i ng .
If you are going to use the DA-78HR in a location
where you think condensation is likely to occur,
move the DA-78HR into the warmer location about
one or two hours before recording is due to start, and
leave it switched on. Turn the DA-78HR off and then
on again before starting recording.

1.5 Recommended tapes

The DA-78H R is desi gned fo r use with Hi8 vid e o
casse t te s . You ca nn ot us e an y ot h e r ki n d of t ape wi t h
the DA-78HR.
Always use new tapes, or tapes in the best possible
condition, in order to achieve the b est possible results
when recording. Tapes which have been over-used
will not give such good results as n ew tapes.
