8.3.3 Setting machine offset “ on the fly”
As well as en tering an absolute numb er, it is also pos-
sible to enter a number “on the fly” as the tapes are
playing.
1Locate the two tap e s (mas ter a n d slave ) so th at
they have the right offset, either by playing the
tapes and pausing them or carry out the next
operation while one or both tapes is being
played back.
2On the slave unit to be offset, press and hold
the SHIFT key, and press the AUTO IN /OUT
(OFFSET) key at the correct offset time to cap-
ture and store the offset.
The display will briefly show AT. OFFSET (AT
OFFSE T), and the current difference between
the master and slave tapes will be stored as an
offse t.

The value entered in this way can be edited later using t he
technique described above.
You cannot determine the offset from an unformatted
tape , or if ei t her ta pe is c urren tly di splay ing a n eg a-
tive ABS value.
8.3.4 An exampl e of se tting offs ets
A practical example of setting offsets is given here.
The master DA-78HR contains the tape with the dia-
log and reference tracks from the video worktape.
Anoth er DA-7 8H R (the sl ave) ha s a tape w ith some
tracks containing video backing music. It is neces-
sary to produce an offset between the two so that
when the master is played, the music tracks will start
at the correct time relative to the dialog an d reference
tracks.
1Locate the slave tape with the backin g music to
the st a rt of the mus ic.
The shuttle mode is useful here (see 7.7, “Shut-
tle operations”).
2Rewind the master to a little before you want
the music to enter.
3Start play ing t he mast er DA -78HR.
4When the music entry point is reached, press
and hol d th e SHIFT key and press the AUTO IN /
OUT key to capture the offset point.
5Stop th e maste r, an d set th e slave int o CHASE
mode (8.2.3, “Master/slave settings (CHASE
mode)”).
6Rewind the master to a little before the music
entry an d start playi n g.
The slave m achin e should n ow follow the trans-
port movements of the master, with the appro-
priate offset, so that the music enters at the
right point.
