2Press the
SUB MENU key until the displa y
shows
RLs. (RLSrelease) and then changes
to the current value for that setting.
3Use the and keys to change the value
between the FAST (FAST ), SLOW (SLOW)
and MED (MEDIUM) settings.
7.9 Sine oscillator
The DA-78HR incorporates a digital oscillator for
lineup and signal tracing purposes. This oscillator is
a sine-wave oscillator at either the standard tuning
frequency of 440Hz or a tape line-up signal at
1kHz.
The oscillator signal level is at the nominal signal
level (but note that since the oscillator is a constant
sine wave, it can not truly be compared with “real-
world” transient signals).
To operate the oscillato r:
1Press the SHIFT key so tha t the SHIFT indicator
is flashing, and press the MENU key until the
displa y sho ws Audio. 2--
(AUDIO2--).
2Press the
SUB MENU key until the displa y
shows
OSC. ;;; (OSC xxx, for oscillator,
with the current set t ing).
3Use the and keys to switch the oscillator
between the different settings (OFF (OFF),
440 (440) , and 1k (1k).
When the oscillator is turned on, it overrides
all other track inputs.
The oscillator setting is not backed up with the other
settings.
NOTE
When using the oscillator, you should turn down the
monitor levels in the control room and studio to avoid
damage to your ears (and the speakers).

7.9.1 Recordin g the osci llator

As mentioned above, the o scillator overrides all other
track inputs, regardless of whether digital or analog
input has been selected.
Recording the oscillator test tone is therefore similar
to any ot her rec ording o perat i on.
7.10REC MUTE (recording silence)
There may be times when you wish to prevent any
signal from reaching an armed track (in other words,
when you record, you are recording silence onto the
track.
1Press the SHIFT key s o that the SHIFT indicator
is flashing, and then press the MENU key until
the display show s Audi o. 1-- (AUDIO1--).
2Press the S UB MENU key until the display
briefly shows REC . MUTE (REC MUTE) and
then changes to show the current setting (the
default is all off).
3Change the settings using the and keys.
4To set record muting for individual tracks, use
the tr ack REC FUNCT ION keys as track selec-
tion ke ys , and cha nge the s e ttings i ndividua lly
for each track using the and keys.
The display will show the track number and
the current mute setting (e.g. TR 1 OFF
(TR
1 OFF).
5When no track is selected using th e REC
FUNCTION keys, the display revert s to ALL
(ALL), as it does if all tracks are the same
value.
If the SHIFT and REC FUNCTION
keys are used, each meter shows the
record mute status of the correspond-
ingly-numbered track, as shown here
(only one segment lights to show the
mute status).
Press SHIFT and one of the REC
FUNCTION keys ( as descr ibed in
4.1.1, “Peak meters”) to toggle this
mete r mo de off an d on. The default at
powe r-on i s for th i s mode t o be on.
Pressing the and keys together makes the
default ALL OFF setting.
7.11Dither
Dither is the technique of adding a known noise to
low-level signals, especially when converting from a
high number of bits (for instance 24 or 20 input bits,
as in the case of the DA-78HR) to a lower number
