Replace the fuse.
1. Main fuse
SCheck the main fuse for continuity.
Refer to “CHECKING THE FUSES” in chap-
ter 3.
SIs the main fuse OK?
2. Battery
SCheck the condition of the battery.
Refer to “CHECKING AND CHARGING THE
BATTERY” in chapter 3.
Open-circuit voltage
12.8 V or more at 20_C
SIs the battery OK?
YES
SClean the battery
terminals.
SRecharge or
replace the battery.
NO

3. Charging voltage
SConnect the engine tachometer to the spark
plug lead of cylinder #1.
SConnect the pocket tester (DC 20 V) to the
battery as shown.
Charging voltage
14 V at 5,000 r/min
Tester positive probe
battery positive terminal
Tester negative probe
battery negative terminal
SStart the engine and let it run at approximate-
ly 5,000 r/min.
SMeasure the charging voltage.

TROUBLESHOOTING
The battery is not being charged.
Check:
1. main fuse
2. battery
3. charging voltage
4. startor coil assembly resistance
5. brush check
6. field coil resistance
7. main switch
8. wiring
(of the entire charging system)
SBefore troubleshooting, remove the following
part(-s):
1) seat
2) fuel tank
3) headlight unit
STroubleshoot with the following special
tool(-s).
