SECTION 17

ALTERNATE HOST

CONSIDERATIONS

General Information

Many types of devices can be attached to the alternate host port of the ULTRA. Alternate hosts may include PCs, minicomputers such as a DEC VAX or a Burroughs, network servers, print-sharing devices and even other protocol converters. This section discusses how to ensure compatibility between the alternate host, coax host and the printer.

Activating the Alternate Host Port

The alternate host port is disabled by default. To activate the alternate host port, Option #50 must be configured by the user. Refer to Section 5 — Configuration Options. The choices for Option #50 are (A) OFF, (B) Both parallel and serial alternate hosts, (C) Serial alternate host and (D) Parallel alternate host. Make the appropriate choice, referring for instructions to Section 8 — Front Panel Configuration or Section 9 — Coax Host Configuration.

Configuring the Alternate Host Port

The dip switches on the ULTRA back panel are also used to configure the unit for an alternate host. The dip switch default settings (all switches in the OFF/up position) are appropriate for a parallel alternate host.

If using a serial alternate host, the settings of dip switch Bank B must be changed. Refer to Section 3 — Dip Switch Settings for information on the appropriate configuration.

Note: Users with both parallel and serial alternate hosts will have to change the dip switch settings and press the RESET button on the ULTRA front panel when switching between parallel and serial alternate hosts. To connect both parallel and serial alternate hosts also requires the use of AGILE’s special “Y” alternate host adapter.
