Create a document

The untitled window is like a blank sheet of paper. In the upper-left corner of the empty document is a blinking vertical line (). This line is called the insertion point, because it marks the place where the text you type will be inserted.

As you type, use your computer keyboard as you would a typewriter keyboard, except:

nIf you make a mistake, press the Delete key to backspace over it.

nDon’t press the Return key when you get to the end of a line. Keep typing, and words will move to the next line automatically.

Type the following text:

All people are born free and equal. Endowed with reason and conscience, they should act towards each other in a spirit of togetherness.

Save your work

Work that you do in a program exists only in the computer’s memory until you save it onto a disk. Since work that exists only in memory is lost when you shut down the computer, you need to save your work so you can come back to it later. If you don’t save your work, it disappears—like thoughts that are lost unless you write them down.

1. Choose Save from the File menu.

The box that appears (called a dialog box) lets you name the document and save it on your hard disk.
