Whileitisimportanttoprotectles,data,andsettingsthatareontheharddiskoronthesolidstatedrive,
youmayalsoneedtoinstallanewoperatingsystem,installnewdevicedrivers,updateyourUEFIBIOS,or
recoverpreinstalledsoftware.Thisinformationwillhelpyouhandleyourcomputerwithpropercareand
keepitintopworkingshape.

Installinganewoperatingsystem

Ifyouinstallanewoperatingsysteminyourcomputer,youneedtoinstalltheSupplementlesandThinkPad
devicedriversforitatthesametime.Thenecessarylesarelocatedinthefollowingdirectoriesofyoursolid
statedriveorharddiskdrive:
•TheSupplementlesfortheoperatingsystemsupport edareintheC:\SWTOOLS\OSFIXESdirectory .
•ThedevicedriversfortheoperatingsystemsupportedareintheC:\SWTOOLS\DRIVERSdirectory.
•ThepreloadedsoftwareapplicationsareintheC:\SWTOOLS\APPSdirectory.
Notes:
•Theprocessofinstallingthenewoperatingsystemdeletesallthedataonyourharddisk,including
backupsorimagesthatwerestoredinahiddenfolderbyuseoftheRescueandRecoveryprogram.
•IfyoucannotndtheSupplementles,thedevicedrivers,andapplicationsoftwareyouneedonyour
harddiskdrive,orifyouwanttor eceiveupdatesandthelatestinformationaboutthem,refertothe

Beforeyoubegin

Beforeyouinstalltheoperatingsystem,dothefollowing:
•CopyallthesubdirectoriesandlesintheC:\SWTOOLSdirectorytoaremovablestoragedevice,toavoid
losinglesduringtheinstallation.
•Printthesectionsyouwillbeusing.Gotothesectionfortheoperatingsystemyouareusing:
–“Windows7”onpage170
–“WindowsVista”onpage171
–“WindowsXP”onpage172
Notes:IfyourcomputerisaWindowsVistaServicePack2orWindows7model,
–32-bitversionsofWindowsdonotsupportThinkPadSetupfeatures.Only64-bitversionsofWindows
cantakeadvantageofthefeaturesenabledby64-bitUEFIBIOS.
–IfyouwanttostartWindowsRecoveryEnvironment(WinRE)using64-bitversionofMicrosoftWindows
InstallationDVD,youshouldnotchangetheinitialUEFI/LegacyBootsettinginThinkPadSetup.The
UEFI/LegacyBootsettingmustbethesameasitwaswhentheWindowsOSimagewasinstalled.Or,
youwillseeanerror.
